Trinamool MP To Join Protest Over Doctor’s Rape-Murder

Kolkata: Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, a Rajya Sabha MP and senior leader of the Trinamool MP, has declared that he will participate in the midnight protest in response to the rape and killing of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The seasoned leader declared his choice on X. “Like millions of Bengali families, I have a daughter and a young granddaughter, so tomorrow I will join the protesters.” We have to step up to the plate. Enough with the mistreatment of women. Together, let’s resist. Come what may,” he wrote late last night in a post.

The senior leader said, “Please need not worry for my fate,” in response to an ‘X’ user who expressed concern that he might be expelled from the Trinamool Congress for participating in a protest against his own government. Blood from a freedom fighter flows in my veins. I’m least bothered.”

The 75-year-old has represented the Trinamool Congress as the House’s deputy leader in addition to being a member of the Upper House of Parliament since.

As part of a widespread demonstration against the doctor’s rape and murder at the government-run hospital, women from Kolkata and other parts of Bengal will take to the streets late tonight. The demonstration is titled “For Women’s independence on the Midnight of independence” and is scheduled to start at 11:55 p.m.

Social media users are sharing posters that list the locations of the protest; as more and more people from the state’s suburbs join it, new locations are added. To demonstrate their support for the cause, many men have also made the decision to participate in the protest. Actors Churni Ganguly, Pratim D. Gupta, and actress Swastika Mukherjee are among the well-known people who have urged people to attend the midnight gathering at the locations that work best for them.

The murder and rape of a thirty-one-year-old physician who was working night shifts at a state-run hospital has rocked Kolkata. In the northern section of the city, in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the physician was discovered dead on Friday morning. She suffered injuries to her neck, limbs, mouth, eyes, and private areas.

In relation to the case, Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer for the community who frequently visited the hospital, was taken into custody.

Yesterday, the Calcutta High Court directed that the CBI take over the case’s investigation. The hospital administration was found to have committed grave mistakes, and the court raised concerns about the potential for evidence to be lost. “It should have happened by now, but no meaningful conclusions have been reached even after five days. We are therefore justified in believing that there is a good chance the evidence will be lost. We believe it is appropriate to move the case to CBI right away,” the statement read.
