Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead on May 29, 2022, just before his 29th birthday. The numerous singers tributes to his memory honor his legacy.
The birth anniversary of the late Sidhu Moosewala is June 11. Today would have been the 31st birthday of the legendary singer who firmly established the Punjabi music industry’s global presence. Though two years have passed since the assassination that shook the nation, Moosewala’s memory lives on and thrives thanks to his deeply loyal fanbase, which appears to be growing at a rapid pace. Not only did Moosewala’s sudden death affect his fans, but it also had a significant impact on the Indian music industry as a whole, with several notable names remembering him from time to time. Here’s a look at some incredible tributes to his evergreen memory.
Diljit Dosanjh
Diljit Dosanjh’s Vancouver concert in June 2022 became emotional for both fans and the singer himself when the Chamkila actor mentioned Sidhu Moosewala’s recent death. Diljit expressed his condolences to the slain singer’s father, who had notably removed his turban at the former’s funeral, via a digital banner that read ‘This Show Is Dedicated To Our Brothers’.
Though Diljit did not dedicate a song specifically to Moosewala, the entire concert was held in his memory. He also posted a photo of the moment to his X account, captioned “ONE LOVE”.
Karan Aujla
Sidhu Moosewala’s hot-and-cold rivalry with Karan Aujla is undoubtedly memorable. The feud began in 2017 after a video of Sidhu criticizing the Softly singer was leaked to the latter’s management, who then threatened to attack him. Though the rivalry appeared to have died down in the middle, it was revived with Aujla’s diss track Lafaafe, which was directed at Sidhu. Aujla eventually reconciled with the latter, albeit after his death. In 2023, he released his peace offering, Maa, in memory of Moosewala.
Divine
Rapper Divine reached a career milestone when he was invited to perform at the IPL 2023 closing ceremony. The Vibe Hai singer began his performance by saying, “Rest in peace, Sidhu Moosewala,” which unsurprisingly received quite a reaction from the fans present, at the stadium for the Chennai Super Kings versus Gujarat Titans match.
King
Rapper King, who served as a judge on MTV Hustle 2.0, made a brief reference to the deceased legend. Speaking about Moosewala, King said, “Vo humare beech nahi hai legend, jiske gaane ne aapko uthaake, ya toh kuch bohot accha karne ko majboor kar dete, ya paagal kar dete aapko”. He ended his tribute by shouting out ‘Sidhu paaji’ followed by a sign of respect.
Shubh
Shubh performed at his first live concert, which took place in October 2023 in London. Midway through the performance, the rapper and singer lifted up a hoodie that presumably bore an image of Sidhu Moosewala, a gesture that his fans praised. Later in the show, Shubh performed his rendition of Moosewala’s chart-topping single, So High, which featured BIG BYRD.
Kapil Sharma
Kapil Sharma’s footprint as a comedian and television personality supersedes his pursuits as a singer. Regardless, during a live performance last year, Kapil Sharma remembered Sidhu Moosewala by belting out a rendition of his song 295. Incidentally, 295 was also used as a Moosewala reference by Congress’ Rahul Gandhi as he affirmed his faith in the public having his back for the recently concluded general elections.
AP Dhillon
P Dhillon went global this year, performing at the Coachella music festival. His tribute to Moosewala, however, was a little different from others. AP performed alongside songwriter and rapper Shinda Kahlon in front of a digital banner that boldly read ‘JUSTICE FOR SIDHU MOOSEWALA’. In fact, the With You singer shared the moment on his social media accounts with the pointed caption, “The media is controlled, and I’m out of control.”
Raja Kumari
Raja Kumari, an American hip-hop artist, has recently ventured into Punjabi music. She collaborated with Guru Randhawa on his track In Love. However, few people know that it was Moosewala who first expressed his desire to hear Raja Kumari sing in Punjabi. Finally taking the plunge, her first Punjabi.
