Sheikh Hasina To Return To Bangladesh

New Delhi:  According to her son, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh will return home when the country’s new caretaker government decides to hold elections.

Hasina was forced to resign following weeks of deadly protests, and on Monday she fled to India. On Thursday, Muhammad Yunus, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, swore in a caretaker government that will oversee the holding of elections.

Her American-based son Sajeeb Wazed Joy stated to the Times of India, “At the moment, she (Hasina) is in India.” As soon as the interim government decides to hold elections, she will return to Bangladesh.”

Following a student-led revolt against the longstanding former prime minister, who resigned after widespread violence claimed the lives of about 300 people and injured thousands more, Hasina’s Awami League party is not represented in the interim government.

She is taking refuge in the vicinity of New Delhi at a safe house. She intends to apply for asylum in Britain, according to reports in Indian media; however, the British Home Office has not responded to inquiries.

S Jaishankar, the foreign minister, stated on Thursday that he discussed Bangladesh with his British counterpart but did not provide any specifics.

Joy declared that if it becomes necessary, he won’t hold back from entering politics. “I am sure the Awami League will take part in the election and we might even win,” he stated.
