Odisha earthquake: Berhampur, Balasore, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar were among the locations that experienced earthquake tremors. As of now, there have been no reports of fatalities or property damage.
On Tuesday morning, Odisha and portions of West Bengal, including the capital Kolkata, were rocked by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in the Bay of Bengal. At 6.10 am, the earthquake occurred close to Puri in Odisha. But as of yet, there have been no reports of fatalities or property damage.
Numerous locations, including Berhampur, Balasore, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar in Odisha, experienced earthquake vibrations. The 5.1 magnitude earthquake took people off guard because Odisha is located in a region that is moderately prone to earthquakes. For about a minute, there were earthquakes.
One Odisha resident tweeted, “At 6:12 am in Rourkela, I could feel the waves, as my room was shaking.” An other user commented, “Felt an earthquake in Cuttack, I was sleeping and got awake by shaking of bed.”
Kolkata, which is nearby, was also affected by the tremors. “Kolkata felt an earthquake. A huge jerk. Did anyone else feel the same way? One was posted on X.
Odisha is less susceptible to earthquakes because it is situated in seismic zones III and II. Zone III includes the areas of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, Sambalpur, and Balasore that are located in the Mahanadi and Brahmani river valleys.
Up to 14 districts in Odisha are vulnerable to earthquakes, the state’s minister of revenue and disaster management told the Assembly last year.
Kolkata is at moderate danger because it is located in seismic zone III. On occasion, nevertheless, the city experiences tremors brought on by earthquakes in North-East India or Nepal. After a strong earthquake in Tibet, moderate vibrations were felt in Kolkata on January 8.
