Srinagar, April 21, 2025 – In light of continuous heavy rainfall and persistent weather warnings, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced the suspension of classwork in all schools across the Kashmir Valley for today, Monday, April 21, 2025.
The decision was officially conveyed by the Education Minister, Sakina Itoo, through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening. She stated, “In light of the continuing severe weather conditions and forecasts, it has been decided that classwork in all schools of the valley shall remain suspended for one day tomorrow (21st April). This decision has been taken as a precautionary step to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.”
This precautionary measure comes as the Kashmir Valley has been experiencing incessant rainfall over the past 48 hours, and the Meteorological Department has predicted more showers in the region over the next 24 hours. The challenging weather conditions have raised concerns about the safety of students, particularly regarding transportation and potential hazards caused by waterlogging and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially on routes prone to landslides and water accumulation. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has also been affected by the heavy rains, with reports of blockages at several points due to landslides and shooting stones, further emphasizing the need for caution.
The closure of schools is a proactive step by the administration to mitigate potential risks associated with the adverse weather conditions and prioritize the safety of the student population. Parents and guardians are advised to keep themselves updated on further announcements from the education department and local authorities regarding the resumption of classes.
It’s worth noting that the Ramban district has been particularly affected by the heavy rainfall, experiencing flash floods and landslides that have resulted in loss of life and damage to property. While the school closure announcement specifically mentions the Kashmir Valley, disruptions and closures might also be in effect in other severely affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
