Brendon McCullum Announced as England Men’s White-ball Coach

From 2025 onwards, England coach Brendon McCullum will also lead the country’s limited-overs teams, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Tuesday. McCullum succeeds Matthew Motts, who resigned after the 2024 T20 World Cup, as head coach of the white-ball teams. McCullum is currently in charge of England’s Test team.

The limited-overs tour of India by England and the ICC Champions Trophy fall in January 2025, and the ECB announced that the New Zealander will take charge of both the Test and limited-overs teams.

The 42-year-old New Zealander, who officially took over the Twenty20 and One-Day international teams in January to coincide with a tour of India and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, has extended his contract by 18 months to the end of 2027.

“I’m thrilled that Brendon has decided to take on both roles with England,” stated England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key.

“I think it is tremendously fortunate for us that a coach of his caliber is willing to dedicate himself fully to English cricket.”

“The white-ball environment has been challenging for the last two years due to constant clashes between formats; fortunately, these are easing starting from January,” he continued.

The former captain of New Zealand, McCullum, expressed his excitement at expanding his role.

He remarked, “I’m eager to work closely with (captain) Jos (Buttler) and the team to build on the strong foundations that are already in place. I’m ready to embrace this new challenge.”

“English cricketers have a ton of talent, and I’m excited to help them realize their full potential.”

Following two disappointing England title defences at the 50-over World Cup and the more recent T20 World Cup, former white-ball coach Matthew Mott resigned in July.

Though his future was questioned, Buttler, a batsman and wicketkeeper, is still leading the team.

Marcus Trescothick, a former batter for England, has been named the acting head coach for the Caribbean tour and the forthcoming white-ball series against Australia.
