Body Recovered From Assam Coal Mine; Efforts on to Trace Others

Assam Coal Mine: One individual was taken into custody, and he was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for running the mine and interacting with the employees.

Nearly 48 hours after at least nine people were trapped in the coal mine in the Dima Hasao area of Assam owing to flooding, rescuers found a body early on Wednesday.

21 A dead body was recently found at the bottom of the well by paradivers. The bereaved family is in our prayers and thoughts,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X.

The rescue effort was launched Tuesday by divers and specialists from the army, navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

According to Sarma, army and NDRF divers are currently entering the well as part of the ongoing rescue effort. “Navy personnel are currently on the scene, finalising their plans to dive in after them.”

SDRF de-watering pumps were en route to the scene, he added. Even though the rescue efforts were likely to be hampered by the local rainfall, an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation de-watering pump was being flown separately.

The flooded coal mine is thought to have trapped the workers 300 feet below the surface. There was a lot of uncertainty on Tuesday, with some officials claiming that nine individuals were stuck in the mine. According to others, the figure might reach fifteen.

After the army, NDRF, and SDRF soldiers noticed some helmets and slippers floating on the water, raising the possibility that some persons were dead, navy divers joined the search on Tuesday.
