On Sunday, September 8, the BCCI revealed the Indian team for the opening Test match against Bangladesh. After missing the previous assignment against England, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant made their Test setup return, but Shreyas Iyer was left out of the 16-man roster.
Beginning on September 19, the two-match Test series will mark the Indian team’s comeback to action. Mohammed Shami, the team’s star pacer, has been given a prolonged rest, as was previously reported, and will not play in the opening game in Chennai.
Yash Dayal, an uncapped fast bowler, was named in the Rohit Sharma-led team, which came as the biggest surprise. The left-arm pacer took four wickets across two innings in the first-round match of the Duleep Trophy to earn his maiden call-up.
After taking nine wickets in the Duleep Trophy first-round match, Akash Deep was able to hold onto his spot. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the Duleep Trophy first-round match, will spearhead the pace attack against Bangladesh.
Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin all makeup India’s spin unit, so there have been no changes to that group.
Four players who were left off of India’s previous Test team against England were Shreyas Iyer, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Washington Sundar. In the Duleep Trophy match against India C, Iyer, leading India D, struck a fast fifty in the second innings, but it was insufficient to cement his place in the team.
The 29-year-old batsman is expected to miss the upcoming Test assignments against Australia and New Zealand. He has amassed 811 runs at an average of 36.86 in 11 Test matches.
