Australian Gay Footballer Announces Engagement

Josh Cavallo made history in 2021 as the first openly gay footballer, inspiring others to follow suit. Cavallo has now proposed to his partner on the pitch at his club, Adelaide United.

Cavallo proposed to Leighton Morrell on one knee at an empty Hindmarsh Stadium, and he later shared photos of the occasion on social media. “Beginning this year with my fiancée. Mr and Mr will be here soon. “Thank you Adelaide United for your assistance in arranging this surprise,” he said.

“Your unwavering support has meant so much to me. You’ve created a safe space in football that I never imagined was possible, and you’ve encouraged me to live my life authentically.” It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all began,” he said. His now-fiance is an electrician.

Cavallo is an Australian Gay footballer who plays as a left-back and midfielder for A-League club Adelaide United. He received the A-League Rising Star award from Adelaide United for his performances in the 2020-21 season. He played for the Australian U-19 team in the 2019 AFC U-19 Championship, as well as the U-20 team once.

Cavallo has revealed in interviews that he knew he was gay since the age of 16, but was too confused and scared to talk about it. He also revealed that having to hide his sexuality made him depressed. He came out as gay in 2021, when there were no openly gay players in top-flight football.

He has received full support from his teammates and head coach Carl Veart, who previously stated, “Josh is a tremendous young man and has shown incredible courage to be one of the very few professional athletes to be this brave…” I have nothing but admiration and respect for him, as do all of the players and coaching staff.”
