According to reports, Apple is developing a new AirTag that should be available on the market in the middle of 2025. Mark Gurman claims that the second-generation AirTag, or just AirTag 2, would have a far greater tracking range, which will make it simpler for users to find their misplaced belongings. Apple’s second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) processor, which debuted in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 last year, is responsible for the enhanced tracking capabilities. Compared to the original UWB chip present in the first-generation AirTag, this new chip has a range that is up to three times greater.
The new AirTag is anticipated to have a revised built-in speaker that will be more challenging to remove in addition to its increased range. This change attempts to address safety issues, especially those related to abuse for stalking. The current version of AirTag’s built-in speaker is easily tampered with, which has previously generated concerns about security and privacy. With this update, Apple appears to be resolving these issues.
Apple doesn’t appear to have any significant plans to alter the AirTag’s general look, though. According to Gurman, the AirTag’s appearance and feel will probably not change except from the updated chip and improved safety measures.
It will have been almost four years since Apple’s initial attempt at item tracking with the release of the updated version of AirTag, which was first introduced in April 2021. For people seeking a quick and easy way to monitor their possessions, the AirTag has been a popular option. Fans of the Apple ecosystem will currently have to wait a little while longer for this anticipated update. If Gurman’s observations are correct, people who want their monitoring devices to have improved safety features and a longer range may find the wait worthwhile.
