Sawan 2024: Story and Rituals

A great deal of valuables, including jewelry, the goddess Lakshmi, and Dhanvantri, emerged during the churning of the ocean. But out of the water also came a lethal poison known as halahal. Anybody who came into contact with the poison was instantly killed. Then, Lord Shiva was asked for assistance by Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. As soon as Lord Shiva drank the poison, the lethal effect caused him to turn blue. Subsequently, Goddess Parvati entered his throat and prevented the poison from spreading. That’s how the name Neelkanth was given to Lord Shiva. These things happened during Sawan.

Several rituals are observed during the month of Sawan. Devotees go for Kanwar Yatra and observe fast on Sawan Somwars. They also worship the Shiva Linga with water, milk and honey. Shiva Kathas are recited, and mantras are chanted to please Lord Shiva and seek his blessings.
