Can Pomegranate Peel Tea Help in Relieving Cough Symptoms?

Many of us have been dealing with persistent coughs as a result of the winter seasonal changes and the onset of colds and flu. If you’ve been trying home remedies like warm beverages, you may have heard about pomegranate peel tea and how it can help with coughs. Nidhi Nahata, a lifestyle coach, shared a video of how to make pomegranate peel tea to relieve a cough. Nahata shared her mother’s instant cough remedy, which can be made with sun-dried and refrigerator-stored pomegranate peel.

Here’s how she made the warm drink from stored pomegranate peels.

*Boil 1 liter of water with 3 inches of pomegranate peel. Reduce volume to 750ml.

*Filter, pour into a glass, and sip all day.

What to note?

*Use sun-dried, refrigerator-stored pomegranate peels.

*Fill it in a flask and keep it on hand to sip all day, she advised.

Does the home remedy work?

Pomegranate peel is thought to have potential cough-relieving properties due to its high antioxidant content, particularly tannins and flavonoids. According to Dr. Ranga Santosh Kumar, consultant general physician and diabetologist at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, these compounds have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that may contribute to “soothing irritation in the throat and respiratory tract, offering relief from cough symptoms”.

However, Dr Kumar emphasized that scientific research into the efficacy of pomegranate peel for cough relief is limited. “While some traditional medicine practices incorporate pomegranate peel for respiratory benefits, more comprehensive studies are needed to establish its effectiveness conclusively.”

Individual responses to natural remedies can vary, so it’s important to approach them with the understanding that they may not be a substitute for professional medical advice or prescribed cough medications.
